Santos’ 1970 season came during the twilight of their golden era, following a decade of dominance led by Pelé. Though no longer the all-conquering force of the early 1960s, Santos remained one of Brazil’s most respected and entertaining teams.

Under coach Antoninho, and with Pelé still starring alongside Clodoaldo, Edu, and Carlos Alberto Torres, Santos continued to play attractive, attacking football. They won the Campeonato Paulista that year — their 10th state title in 15 years — with Pelé finishing as one of the top scorers.

While continental and national success eluded them, the 1970 season marked the end of Santos’ golden generation and Pelé’s final years dazzling Brazilian football.
