The Netherlands’ 1996 season centered on their campaign at UEFA Euro 1996 in England — a turbulent tournament that mixed immense talent with internal discord.
Managed by Guus Hiddink, the Dutch squad was loaded with stars like Dennis Bergkamp, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Ronald de Boer, and Frank de Boer, but suffered from dressing-room tensions between the older and younger generations, particularly between Ajax and PSV players.
In the group stage, the Netherlands narrowly advanced after drawing with Scotland (0–0), beating Switzerland (2–0), and losing to England (4–1). In the quarterfinals, they were eliminated by France on penalties (5–4) after a 0–0 draw.
Euro 1996 exposed divisions but also signaled the coming maturity of the Ajax generation — setting up the Netherlands’ stronger, united sides that followed in the late 1990s.
