West Germany’s 1986 season was defined by their dramatic and determined run to the FIFA World Cup final in Mexico under coach Franz Beckenbauer.
Despite a shaky start — including a 1–1 draw with Uruguay and a 2–0 loss to Denmark in the group stage — West Germany grew stronger as the tournament progressed. Led by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme, and goalkeeper Harald Schumacher, they defeated Morocco (1–0), Mexico (on penalties), and France (2–0) to reach their third World Cup final in four tournaments.
In the final, they came from 2–0 down to level against Argentina, before Jorge Burruchaga’s late goal sealed a 3–2 defeat.
The 1986 campaign showcased West Germany’s trademark resilience and unity — setting the stage for their redemption and World Cup triumph in 1990.
