West Germany’s 1988 season was a significant and encouraging one, highlighted by their strong showing as hosts of UEFA Euro 1988, a tournament that signaled the national team’s revival after a mixed mid-1980s period.
Managed by Franz Beckenbauer, West Germany fielded a talented and balanced squad featuring Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme, Jürgen Klinsmann, Rudi Völler, Thomas Berthold, and Jürgen Kohler.
At Euro 1988, they won their group, defeating Denmark (2–0) and Spain (2–0) before losing 2–1 to the Netherlands in a dramatic semifinal in Hamburg — a match remembered for Marco van Basten’s late winner.
Though they fell short of the final, 1988 marked the emergence of a new, dynamic West Germany side that would go on to win the 1990 World Cup two years later.
