Chile’s 1982 season centered on their participation in the FIFA World Cup Spain 1982, their first appearance at the tournament since 1974 — but it ended in disappointment.
Under coach Luis Santibáñez, Chile qualified strongly from South America, boasting talented players like Carlos Caszely, Patricio Yáñez, Leonel Herrera, Mario Osbén, and Enzo Escobar.
At the World Cup, they were drawn into a tough group with Austria, West Germany, and Algeria. Chile lost all three matches — 0–1 to Austria, 1–4 to West Germany, and 2–3 to Algeria — finishing bottom of the group.
Despite the early exit, the team showed attacking intent, with Caszely scoring twice. The 1982 campaign was a learning experience that underscored Chile’s need for renewal before their stronger showings later in the decade.
