Bolivia’s 1994 season was one of the most significant in the nation’s football history, as they participated in the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1950.
Under coach Xabier Azkargorta, Bolivia qualified impressively from the South American group, famously defeating Brazil 2–0 in La Paz — Brazil’s first-ever loss in World Cup qualifying. Their squad featured stars like Marco Etcheverry, Erwin “Platini” Sánchez, Marco Sandy, and captain Carlos Trucco in goal.
At the USA 1994 World Cup, Bolivia were placed in a tough group with Germany, Spain, and South Korea. They lost 1–0 to Germany, drew 0–0 with South Korea, and fell 3–1 to Spain, exiting in the group stage.
Despite the results, 1994 remains Bolivia’s most celebrated football year — their World Cup return and national pride moment.
