Belgium’s 2000 season was historic yet disappointing, as the nation co-hosted UEFA Euro 2000 with the Netherlands — their first major tournament on home soil.

Managed by Robert Waseige, Belgium entered the competition with optimism, featuring stars like Marc Wilmots, Emile Mpenza, Bart Goor, Lorenzo Staelens, and veteran goalkeeper Filip De Wilde. They opened impressively, defeating Sweden 2–1 in Brussels, but then suffered a 2–0 loss to Italy and a costly 2–0 defeat to Turkey, which saw them eliminated in the group stage.

Despite the early exit, the tournament helped rejuvenate Belgian football, paving the way for future development and the emergence of the “Golden Generation” a decade later.
