Ajax’s 1997/98 season was a triumphant return to dominance in Dutch football under manager Morten Olsen, combining stylish play with consistency and silverware.
After a few transitional years following Louis van Gaal’s departure, Ajax rebuilt around stars such as Jari Litmanen, Frank and Ronald de Boer, Danny Blind, Edwin van der Sar, Witschge, and emerging talents like Shota Arveladze and Sunday Oliseh.
They won the Eredivisie comfortably, finishing 17 points clear of PSV Eindhoven, and also lifted the KNVB Cup, completing a domestic double. Arveladze and Litmanen provided goals, while Ajax’s defense was again among Europe’s best.
In Europe, however, they disappointed — eliminated early in the UEFA Cup.
The 1997/98 campaign restored Ajax’s reputation as the best team in the Netherlands — disciplined, creative, and dominant on home soil.
